What a hard way to return to work after a month off over Christmas!
As a way of saying thankyou for the work I did organising the CSC team in the Sydney to Gong bike ride for Multiple Sclerosis CSC sent me to Adelaide for the first stage of the Tour Down Under. I returned to work on the 21st but left at lunch time and flew down to Adelaide. Stayed at the Adelaide Hilton International (not the Hilton Hotel in the suburb of Hilton ) which was where all the professional Cycling teams from Europe were staying as well! We tagged along and went to the Mayors Civic Reception for the cycling teams for dinner and drinks. At the reception I got to meet Migual Indurian who was the first cyclist ever to win 5 Tour de France events in a row. There’s a photo on myself and some other CSC guys with him on the gallery on my site.
The next day I went to a champagne breakfast at the CSC Adelaide office where we had access to the Team CSC riders and officials (Scott Sunderland and John Axel Hansen). After a Q&A session we had some time with them to get some autographs and them it was off to the starting line to watch the first stage start.
Throughout the day we received regular updates direct from the Team CSC Sports Director, Scott Sunderland, on what was happening and what he was planning. Awesome stuff and something that you don’t get to participate in very often!
Once the race had started we got taken out to Saltram winery in the Barossa Valley for a lovely lunch during lunch the race went by the entrance to the winery so we walked down to watch the Peloton go by. After lunch we hopped back onto the bus and travelled over to the finish of the race. Stuart O’Grady finished 6th after some sort of interference by one of the other riders cut short his sprint for the finish. Once the race was finished we had access into the Team CSC area where the riders cooled off, rehydrated and got their rub downs if required. There is a photo of me with Stuart O’Grady here in the Gallery on my site.
What an unbelievable experience and one I will never forget!
P.S. Team CSC have now posted a number of the photos I took into their Tour Down Under gallery
