I was installing SharePoint Server 2010 today and didn’t get past the pre-requisite installer stage before hitting an error! The pre-requisite installer successfully configured the Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client was already installed so no action was taken. The next step downloading and installing Windows Identity Foundation. The exact error shown in the pre-requisite installer dialog was:
Windows Identity Foundation (KB974405): installation error
As a result of this failure all of the remaining pre-requisite installation steps were skipped.
After a bit of digging around I found the following error in the Setup Event Log occuring about the same time as I was attempting to run the pre-requisite installer.
Windows update could not be installed because of error 2147943458 "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\Z-DA-D~1\AppData\Local\Temp\1\KB99495.tmp.msu" /quiet /norestart")
A quick check of the services running on the server discovered that neither the “Backgroung Intelligent Transfer” service nor the “Windows Update” service were enabled. I promptly enabled both and then reran the pre-requisite installer.
The installer ran through the remaining steps successfully so problem solved.
